Welcome to the Family, YVY Destilaria!
January's Gin of the Month, hailing from Brazil, brought our members some much-needed sunshine this January.
Gin YVY Mar, which was distilled in the beautiful city of Belo Horizonte in the north of Brazil, is an ode to the immigrants who over generations have contributed to the singular culture of South America's largest country.
Key botanicals include kombu seaweed -- a nod to the Japanese diaspora in Brazil -- and almond, which was brought to Brazil by immigrants from the Arabian peninsula. The gin also features fresh lemon and orange, both unusual citruses in a country where lime dominates, add a bright note to balance sweet spices like cardamom and nutmeg.
The liquid's label is a rich blue embossed with constellations. As YVY Destilaria co-founder André Sá Fortes explains, "Whenever people establish themselves in a new land, they look to the stars and find animals they recognise."
Gin YVY Mar is just one YVY Destilaria's expressions. Its trinity of gins -- Mar, Ar and Terra -- aim to capture the essence of Brazil. While Mar pays tribute to the populations who travelled across oceans to find a new home, Terra honours indigenous Brazilians, and is made with botanicals native to the country. André and his team spent the best part of a year travelling through the six biomes of Brazil to discover them. Ar, meanwhile, is a testament to modern Brazil, and uses cutting-edge botanicals and techniques to capture the vibrancy of the nation today.
This goal is echoed in the name; yvy is a word from the Tupi-Guarani language, one of Brazil's indigenous languages, which means 'the ground we walk on'.
Graham McAteer, Craft Gin Club's Gin Expert, says, "Gin YVY Mar is a love letter to Brazil, and its varied botanical list reflects all of the cultural influences that have made its home such a singular place. Gently warming spices offer the drinker South American sunshine, while the botanical blend as a whole conjures up all the sounds and smells of Carnival."
